• 1 premade chocolate or Oreo cookie crust (if not making your own)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chocolate
    • Chop the semisweet chocolate into small pieces and set aside.
    • Tip: Use 4 squares for a milder flavor or 6 for a richer chocolate taste.
  2. Make the Custard Base
    • In a microwave-safe glass bowl, combine heavy cream, milk, egg yolks, sugar, powdered sugar, cornstarch, and salt.
    • Whisk until smooth and well blended.
  3. Microwave and Thicken
    • Microwave the mixture on high for 3 minutes. Remove and whisk.
    • Continue microwaving in 1-minute increments, whisking after each minute, until the mixture is thick like pudding (this may take up to 6 additional minutes depending on your microwave).
  4. Add Flavor
    • Once thickened, stir in vanilla extract.
    • Add the chopped chocolate to the hot custard and stir until completely melted and smooth.
    • For an optional flavor boost, mix in strong coffee or Kahlua.
  5. Prepare the Crust

For Homemade Oreo Crust:
• Combine crushed Oreos and melted butter in a bowl.
• Press the mixture firmly into a pie plate to form an even crust.

For Store-Bought Crust:
• Use a premade chocolate or Oreo cookie crust for convenience.

  1. Assemble the Pie
    • Pour the hot custard into the prepared crust, smoothing the top with a spatula.
  2. Chill and Serve
    • Refrigerate the pie until fully chilled and set, at least 2 hours.
    • Garnish with whipped cream or dessert topping before serving.

Tips for Success

1. Use High-Quality Chocolate: The better the chocolate, the richer the flavor.
2. Watch the Microwave: Microwaves vary, so keep an eye on the custard to avoid overcooking.
3. Customize Your Crust: Swap Oreos for graham crackers or any cookie you prefer.

Yummilicious Microwave Chocolate Pie

This is my sister Heidi's recipe…this has replaced my grandmother's recipe as the "family chocolate pie" (sorry Grama). It's super easy and so awesomely chocolaty. It's perfect EVERY time…and it's so good, you'll be tempted to eat a whole one by yourself. Make sure you make 2, it goes FAST.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 c heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 c milk
  • 1/2 c sugar
  • 2 Tbsp powdered sugar
  • 4 to 6 1 oz. squares semisweet baking chocolate
  • 2 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 4 lg egg yolks
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 Tbsp strong black coffee or kahlua optional

HOMEMADE OREO CRUST:

  • 1-1/2 to 2 cups finely crushed oreos
  • 4 Tbsp 1/2 stick butter, melted

MISCELLANEOUS:

  • whipped cream or dessert topping to garnish
  • 1 premade chocolate or oreo cookie crust if you don’t make your own

Instructions

  • Chop chocolate with sharp knife into small pieces and set aside. NOTE** The original recipe calls for 6 squares of chocolate, but one day I only had 4 on hand and it turned out just fine!…and the nice thing about using 4 squares is that they come 8 to a box…so you can get 2 whole pies out of one box.
  • In microwave-safe glass bowl: combine cream, milk, egg yolks, sugar, powdered sugar, cornstarch and salt. Whisk until well-blended.
  • Microwave on high for 3 minutes (I have a 1000-watt microwave). Whisk.
  • Continue to microwave in 1 minute increments, whisking after each minute, until mixture is thick like pudding (can take up to 6 or so extra minutes depending on microwave).
  • Add vanilla and stir after it’s cooked. *NOTE* If you stop here you have YUMMY vanilla custard that you can serve on its own or use as a base for other custard recipes!
  • Add chopped chocolate to hot custard mixture and stir until all melted and blended. Add coffee (or Kahlua, if desired) now.
  • For HOMEMADE crust: Mix crushed oreos and butter, press FIRMLY in pie plate.
  • Pour in cookie crust. Chill. Serve with whipped cream or dessert topping on top.
