A CUTE, CREEPY CRAWLY TREAT
Dirt Cake with Worms is a chocolate pudding dessert topped with crushed Oreos and gummy worms. It’s easy to make, fun to eat, and always a crowd-pleaser for the kids. Whether you’re serving it for a Halloween party or just as a fun summer treat, it’s bound to be a hit!
HOW TO MAKE DIRT CAKE WITH WORMS
OREOS: Start by crushing your Oreos. A food processor works great to get fine crumbs, but you can also crush them in a ziplock bag using a rolling pin. Set the crumbs aside.
CREAM CHEESE MIXTURE: In a medium bowl, beat together cream cheese, butter, and powdered sugar until smooth. Gently fold in whipped cream until fully combined.
PUDDING: In a large bowl, whisk together the pudding mix and milk until thickened. Fold this mixture into the cream cheese mixture, creating a smooth mousse.
ASSEMBLE: Begin layering by spooning Oreo crumbs into the bottom of clear cups or small jars. Add a layer of the chocolate mousse on top (using a piping bag or a ziplock bag with the corner cut off for easier assembly). Repeat the layers, finishing with a top layer of Oreo crumbs.
GARNISH: Just before serving, add gummy worms to the top for that creepy crawly effect. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
VARIATIONS
- Pudding: Chocolate pudding gives that “dirt” look, but you can get creative with flavors! Try vanilla, butterscotch, banana cream, or even pistachio for a fun twist. Just make sure to use instant pudding.
- Serving Options: You can serve dirt cake as one large dessert in a 9×13 dish or divide it into individual portions using clear cups. For a layered look, alternate pudding and Oreo crumbs, placing gummy worms throughout for extra fun.
RECIPE TIPS
- Crushing Oreos: Don’t remove the filling—crush the whole cookie for the best texture. For finer crumbs, use a blender or food processor, or crush them by hand for a chunkier texture.
- Keep it fluffy: When mixing the cream cheese and pudding layers, fold gently to maintain a light and airy texture.
- Chill time: Let the dirt cake chill for at least 2 hours before serving to help the flavors meld and the texture set.
MAKE AHEAD & STORAGE
Dirt cake can be made up to 24 hours in advance, but it’s best to add the gummy worms and final layer of Oreos right before serving to keep them from getting soggy. If you have leftovers, remove the gummy worms and store the cake covered in the fridge for 2-3 days. Just be aware that the Oreo crumbs may soften over time.
Enjoy this disgustingly fun dessert that’s sure to entertain the kids and satisfy their sweet tooth!
